What this size is for

The one Play asset with a single exact size and no tolerance: 1024 × 500, or the listing does not publish. It is also the asset Play uses as the cover image for your preview video and in the large-format placements where it promotes apps.

Google is unusually specific about composition here. Keep the focal point central, keep key elements — logo, app name, slogan, main UI — out of the edge cutoff zones, and it warns that failing to do so can make the graphic ineligible for those placements entirely.

It also advises against pure white, black or dark grey, which blend into Play’s own background, and against branding that duplicates your app icon, since the two are shown together.

The mistake to avoid: Exporting a PNG with transparency. Play requires 24-bit PNG or JPEG with no alpha, and a flattened export is the single most common fix for a rejected feature graphic.

Will this file work on the App Store?

No. Apple does not accept arbitrary dimensions: every App Store slot has an exact list of accepted sizes, and 1024 × 500 px is not on any of them. If you are shipping to both stores, build the design once and export each store's canvas separately.
