What this size is for
The odd one out among Play assets: this is the one image that must have an alpha channel, where screenshots and the feature graphic must have none.
Google is explicit that it does not replace your app’s launcher icon — it should be a higher-fidelity, higher-resolution version of it that follows Play’s icon design specifications.
There is a file-size ceiling too, 1024 KB, which a heavily detailed icon export can exceed surprisingly easily.
Will this file work on the App Store?
No. Apple does not accept arbitrary dimensions: every App Store slot has an exact list of accepted sizes, and 512 × 512 px is not on any of them. If you are shipping to both stores, build the design once and export each store's canvas separately.
Design at 512 × 512 without doing the maths
Open the editor with the canvas already set to 512 × 512, drop your app screens into a device frame, and export the whole set — watermark-free on the free plan.
